
The Nigerian Immigration Service announced on Wednesday, it has arrested 400 illegal immigrants in Edo State following a mop-up operation in the 18 local government areas of the state.
HiveMediaNG gathered immigrants arrested at Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Esan-West and Uhunmwode LGA’s entered Nigeria from some neighbouring countries like Niger Republic, Mali and Chad.
Three NIS officers got injured as they were attacked during the operation.
Mr David Adi, the Edo State NIS Controller who confirmed the arrest, said that the operation became necessary due to intelligence reports that many illegal immigrants had relocated to Edo without any means of livelihood.
He also said the immigrants should have entered Nigeria with legal documents through approved routes irrespective of their free movement privilege in Nigeria as ECOWAS citizens.
